First Time for Everything

First Time for Everything

With the conclusion of the regular season on May 7th the Stars baseball team began a string of firsts.  They won their first conference championship beating out annual powerhouse Jackson College by one game and setting them up to play Kellogg Community College for a chance to win their first Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA) State Championship. Though they lost to Kellogg 7-6 in 10 innings, the Stars would enter the district tournament with some momentum.

With a first round matchup against Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC) the Stars were taking on an opponent whom they defeated in April 5-0 in a single nine inning game.  This game would be a repeat victory for the Stars 5-0 in nine innings with Blake Dahlstrom pitching the complete game shut out.  The scoring for the Stars would be led by Jake Crum (2-4 hitting with 1RBI and 1 run scored) and Carson Eby (1-4 hitting with 2RBI).

The Stars would get their second victory of the tournament beating Kellogg CC 8-6 behind the teams second complete game pitched by Andrew Brighton, who went all nine innings giving up 6 runs (3 earned) with 5 K's and 5 walks.  the scoring for the Stars was led by Jake Crum (3-5 hitting with 1RBI and scoring 3 runs) and Hunter Ruhstorfer (2-4 hitting with 3RBI and a run scored).

The next matchup for the Stars would be the first of three against Sinclair Community College in the District tournament.  The first game would be won by the Stars 11-9.  The top of the batting order of Jake Crum, Alex Huard, and Carson Eby, would provide much of the hitting/scoring for the team with the three combining for 10 hits on 16 plate appearances having 9RBI and scoring 6 runs.  The pitching would be provided by the trio of starter Josh Bobel and relievers Alex Archambeault and Cam Fewless.

Game two of the eventual three game set between Lansing and Sinclair would again provide entertaining scoring with Sinclair picking up the victory winning the contest 15-11 and handing the Stars their first loss of the tourament.  The scoring would go back and forth throughout the game with each team putting seven runs on the board in the 5th inning but the Stars would only score one more run in the final four innings.

For the third and winner take all game, it was all Lansing.  The Stars would outscore Sinclair 12-0 in the nine innings played behind the second complete game pitched in the tournament by Andrew Brighton (9innings, 6 hits, 7 K's and only 2 walks) which would garner him tournament MVP honors.  The Stars battery would be led by Freshman Drew Cantrell (5-5 hitting with 3RBI and 3 runs scored and Chris Lowe (2-4 hitting with 3RBI and a walk).

With the victory the Stars earn their first ever District/Regional baseball championship and head to Enid, Oklahoma for their first ever appearance in the NJCAA DII Baseball World Series played May 27th through June 3rd.
